Today, we arrive at Harbor Stop 6 - Part 2 of 2: Taking the Helm

Today's Scripture: Joshua 1:9 (NKJV) "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

In Part 1, we discovered how easily fear can begin influencing our decisions, causing us to hesitate, retreat, or remain anchored when God is calling us forward. But recognizing fear is not the same as overcoming its influence.

There comes a moment when every Captain must decide what will guide the course ahead. Will we continue steering according to what we fear, or will we trust God enough to follow where He leads? Taking back the Helm is that moment of decision. It is choosing faith over fear, obedience over hesitation, and God's direction over our own uncertainty.

Recognizing what has been influencing the Helm is only the beginning. Now comes the choice to change course.

🏠 Safe Harbor Awaits 

A ship doesn't drift toward its destination. It drifts wherever the wind and current carry it.

Every safe voyage requires a Captain who makes intentional course corrections. The Christian life is no different. If fear has been influencing your decisions, today is the day to take back the Helm - not by trusting your own strength, but by fixing your eyes on Jesus, the Lighthouse, following the Compass of God's Word, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide the Rudder.

In our last Harbor Stop, we discovered how fear can quietly influence the way we steer our lives. It doesn't remove us from the Helm, but if left unchecked, it can lead us away from the course God has set before us.

Today, we continue that journey. Joshua stood where many of us have stood—facing an uncertain future with every reason to hesitate. Yet God's answer wasn't to explain every detail of the journey. It was to remind Joshua of His presence.

The same is true for us. As the Captain, you can take back control of the Helm. Taking it back means refusing to let fear determine your direction. Keep your eyes on Jesus, your Lighthouse, follow the Compass of God's Word, and trust the Holy Spirit to guide the Rudder. Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's choosing to obey God while trusting Him with the voyage ahead.

⚓ Drop Anchor 

Pause and Pray: Lord, show me where fear has been influencing my decisions and pulling me off course. Give me the courage to take back the Helm and choose faith over fear. Strengthen me to follow Your direction and obey Your Word, knowing You are with me every step of the journey. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Before changing course, take an honest look at where fear may still be influencing the Helm.

–    What decision have you delayed because of fear?

–    Where is God asking you to trust Him instead of your own understanding?

–    Are you steering by God's promises or by your circumstances?

–    What is one step of obedience you've been avoiding?

📖 Voices from the Harbor 

Joshua stood on the edge of an uncertain future. Moses was gone, the Jordan River lay ahead, and the Promised Land was filled with fortified cities and powerful enemies. Humanly speaking, Joshua had every reason to hesitate. Yet God's message was not to explain every detail of the journey, it was to remind Joshua of His presence: "Be strong and of good courage...for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Courage was never meant to come from Joshua's own strength. It came from trusting the One who was leading the voyage.

Jesus extended that same invitation to ordinary people. With two simple words, “Follow Me,” He placed a choice before them. Peter and Andrew could leave their nets or remain with what was familiar. Matthew could rise from the tax collector’s table or stay seated. Each had to decide whether the security of what they knew would determine their course or whether they would trust the One calling them forward.

They did not know every turn the journey would take, nor did Jesus give them a map of everything that lay ahead. He gave them something far greater; Himself. Their obedience began with trusting the One who called them. Jesus did not require complete understanding before they followed; He called for willing hearts that trusted Him enough to take the next step.

The invitation remains the same today: “Follow Me.” We may not know where every step of obedience will lead, but we know the One we are following.

That same trust has marked faithful believers throughout history. William Carey was an English Baptist pastor, missionary, linguist, Bible translator, and educator who is widely regarded as the "Father of Modern Missions." He lived from 1761 to 1834 and spent over 40 years serving in India. He felt God calling him to India at a time when many believed overseas missions were unnecessary or impossible. The obstacles were overwhelming, yet Carey believed God was already at work beyond the horizon. His challenge to the Church still echoes today: "Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God." Carey wasn't remembered because he possessed extraordinary courage. He is remembered because he trusted an extraordinary God.

God calls each of us to take the Helm in every decision we make. Joshua, the disciples, and William Carey each faced uncertainty, yet none allowed fear to determine their course. They fixed their eyes on God, trusted His promises, and obeyed His leading one step at a time.

Now that same choice rests with every Captain. Taking back the Helm doesn't mean taking control away from God - it means surrendering fear's influence and intentionally steering according to His direction.

⛵ Adjust Your Sails 

Taking back the Helm doesn't always require one giant act of courage. More often, it begins with the next faithful step.

Ask God to show you one act of obedience today. Adjust your sails toward His direction rather than allowing fear, comfort, or uncertainty to determine your course.

Remember: You don't have to see the entire voyage to take the next step. You only need to trust the One who does.

🌅 Harbor Reflections

The Lighthouse has never moved. The sea will not always be calm. Fear doesn't have the final word.

Jesus, the Lighthouse, has not moved. God's Word, the Compass, still points true. The Holy Spirit still guides the Rudder.

Fear may have influenced your course, but it does not have to determine where you go from here. Taking back the Helm begins with a decision: I will trust God more than I trust my fear.

Set your course toward the Lighthouse. Follow the Compass. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide the Rudder.

Captain, it's time to take back the Helm.

🧹 Maintain the Deck 

Taking back the Helm is not a one-time decision. Fear can quietly return through hesitation, excuses, distractions, and the desire to remain comfortable.

Guard your heart by spending time in God's Word each day. Pray before making important decisions. Stay connected with fellow believers who encourage your faith rather than reinforce your fears.

Regularly check your course. When fear begins influencing the Helm again, recognize it, bring it to God, and correct your course.

A well-maintained deck leaves little room for fear to accumulate.

🙏 Cast Your Cares 

If you've never trusted Jesus...The greatest step you'll ever take is surrendering your life to Christ. He is the Lighthouse who never fails and the Savior who welcomes every weary traveler home. You don't have to navigate life without Him. His invitation is still open today.

If fear has been influencing your course...Bring that fear to God. Tell Him where you've been hesitant, where you've been afraid, and where you've struggled to obey. He does not ask you to manufacture courage in your own strength. Trust His presence and take the next faithful step.

If you're learning to walk courageously...Thank God for every place He has helped you overcome fear and move forward in faith. Ask Him to keep your heart sensitive to His direction and to use your journey to encourage another

🗺️ Plot Your Course

This week, identify one area where fear has been influencing your decisions.

Pray over it. Search God's Word for wisdom. Seek godly counsel if needed. Then take one faithful step of obedience.

Don't wait until the waters are calm. Take back the Helm. Fix your eyes on Jesus, your Lighthouse, and courageously follow where He leads.

Follow Jesus. Make Him known.

🛟 Your First Step Home

If you have never placed your faith in Jesus, today can be the beginning of a new course. Salvation begins by turning from sin, trusting in what Jesus Christ has done for you, and surrendering your life to Him. You don't have to have the entire voyage figured out, you simply need to take your first step of faith and follow the Lighthouse home.

Lord Jesus,

I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose again so that I could be forgiven and have eternal life.

Today, I turn from my sin and place my faith in You. Forgive me, make me new, and become the Lord of my life. I have tried to navigate life in my own strength, but today I choose a new course. Help me keep my eyes on You, my Lighthouse, and teach me to follow the truth of Your Word. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and guide me as I learn to walk with You. Whatever waters lie ahead, I choose to trust You. From this day forward, I belong to You.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.
