Harbor Stop 21: Into the Harbor, Out with Purpose
Anchor Scripture: John 7:37–38 (NKJV) “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
What Christ pours into us in the Harbor is meant to flow through us, pointing others through their storms toward Jesus, the Lighthouse.

🏠 Safe Harbor Awaits
There is a reason Jesus begins with “Come to Me and drink” before He speaks of rivers flowing out.
Before we can carry hope into someone else’s storm, we need Christ ourselves. Before we can point someone toward the Lighthouse, we need to know where the Light is coming from. Before God works through our lives, He first works within them.
The Harbor is not merely a place to hide from the storms of life. In Christ, it is where weary hearts find rest, thirsty souls are filled, wounds begin to heal, truth corrects our course, and the Holy Spirit prepares us for what lies beyond the shoreline.
But we were never meant to remain tied to the dock.
Jesus brings us into the Harbor so that, in His time and by His strength, we can go out with purpose.
Somewhere beyond the Harbor, another person may be searching for the Light we have already found.

Pause and Pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Source of living water. Before I seek to serve others, teach me to come to You and receive what only You can give. Fill my heart with Your truth, grace, and love. Help me recognize that what You have done in my life is not meant to end with me. Prepare me to carry Your hope into the lives of others, and may everything that flows through me point them back to You, the Lighthouse. In Your name I pray, Amen.
🧭 Check Your Bearings
It is possible to become so focused on what we are supposed to do for God that we neglect what God wants to do in us.
Ask yourself:
Am I regularly coming to Jesus to drink, or am I trying to pour from yesterday’s supply?
Have I become busy doing things for Christ while spending less time simply being with Christ?
When someone encounters me, do my words and actions ultimately point toward Jesus or merely toward me?
Maybe you have been through something difficult and wondered why God allowed you to walk that particular stretch of water. We should be careful about assuming we know every reason God permits suffering. But Scripture shows repeatedly that God can use what He has taught, restored, and developed within His people for the good of others.
Your storm does not make you the Savior of someone else's storm.
But knowing where your rescue came from gives you something worth sharing.
📖 Voices from the Harbor
Come and Drink
Jesus stood before the crowd and said: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” — John 7:37 (NKJV)
Notice where Jesus directs the thirsty person: “Come to Me.” Not to religion. Not to self-improvement.Not to another person. To Jesus.
Then comes the promise: “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” — John 7:38 (NKJV)
John immediately explains in verse 39 that Jesus was speaking concerning the Holy Spirit. The believer is not the source; God is at work within the believer.
Matthew Henry draws attention to both the abundance and movement in Jesus’ picture. He describes the Spirit's work as living, running water and explains that grace and comfort received within a believer should produce godly living and be communicated for the benefit of others. Bible Gateway
That distinction matters.
We don't carry people to ourselves. We point people toward the Source from whom we received. The river flows, but the glory belongs to the One who supplied the water.
You Shall Be My Witnesses
After His resurrection, Jesus gave His disciples a mission: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…” — Acts 1:8 (NKJV) Bible Gateway
Again, notice the order. Receive power. Then become witnesses. Jesus did not send the disciples into the world dependent upon their own abilities. The Holy Spirit would empower them, and what God placed within them would move through them.
Then Acts 2 shows it happening. The Holy Spirit came upon the believers. Peter—the disciple who had once denied knowing Jesus—stood before the crowd and proclaimed Christ. About three thousand people received his word and were baptized that day.
The frightened disciple had become a witness.
But Peter did not stand before the crowd saying, Look what I have become. He pointed them to Jesus. That pattern continues throughout Acts. The gospel moves from Jerusalem outward. Ordinary believers carry the message of Christ into new places and new lives.
Into the Harbor. Out with Purpose.
They had encountered the risen Christ. They received the Holy Spirit. Then they went out and made Jesus known.
Someone Is Still Looking for the Light
Our world looks very different from the world of Acts, but people are still thirsty.
They may sit beside us at work, live across the street, or scrolling through social media late at night. They may be raising children, caring for aging parents, struggling financially, grieving someone they lost, rebuilding after a broken relationship, carrying shame from their past, or quietly wondering whether God could possibly still want them.
Sometimes their storm is obvious. Sometimes you would never know. This is where our purpose becomes personal.
Imagine a coworker tells you quietly, “I don't know how much more I can handle.”
You may recognize that feeling because you have been there. You could simply say, I understand.
Sometimes listening is exactly where love begins. But perhaps the conversation opens a door for something more: “I understand more than you might realize. There was a time when I didn't know how I was going to make it either. But Jesus met me there.”
Now you have done something different.
You haven't made yourself the answer. You have pointed toward Jesus, the Lighthouse.
That is what testimony can do. Your story is not ultimately about how strong you became.
It is about Who met you when you weren't strong enough.
The person standing in front of you may never have opened a Bible. They may not walk into a church tomorrow. They may not immediately understand everything you believe.
But they can encounter the love, truth, mercy, and hope of Christ flowing through the life of someone who has first received those things from Him.
Sometimes God places us near another person's storm not so that we can become their rescue, but so that we can point toward the One who is.
⛵ Adjust Your Sails
Going out with purpose does not mean you need a platform, ministry title, microphone, or perfectly polished testimony.
Start with the waters God has already placed you in. Your workplace.Your family.Your neighborhood.Your friendships. The person God puts in front of you today.
Ask a different question as you begin your day: “Jesus, what have You given me that You want to use through me today?”
Maybe it is encouragement, patience, forgiveness, generosity, or your testimony. Maybe simply the courage to say His name when an opportunity comes. Don't force the conversation. Don't try to become someone's Savior. Just keep pointing toward the Lighthouse.
🌅 Harbor Reflections
Consider what Christ has already poured into your life.
What has He taught you in the Harbor that someone else may need to hear?
Where have you experienced His faithfulness?
What storm has given you compassion for someone navigating similar waters?
When people encounter your life, what do they learn about Jesus?
And perhaps the most important question: Are you still coming to Christ to drink, or have you become so busy pouring out that you have neglected the Source?
We cannot live indefinitely on yesterday's water. Return to Jesus.
Let Him fill what has become empty. Then trust Him with where the river goes.
🧹 Maintain the Deck
Purpose requires attention to what is happening within us. A clogged channel cannot flow freely. Pride can turn testimony into self-promotion. Bitterness can distort grace. Busyness can leave us spiritually dry. Fear can keep us silent when God opens a door.
Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Is there something interfering with what God wants to do through you?
Keep the Deck tended through prayer, Scripture, repentance, obedience, and time with Christ. We don't maintain the Deck to make ourselves worthy of being used.
We maintain it because we belong to the Captain of our salvation, and we want our lives ready for His purposes.
🙏 Cast Your Cares
Jesus, You are the Source of living water. Thank You for inviting me to come to You when I am thirsty. Forgive me for the times I have tried to pour from my own strength or have kept what You have given me only for myself. Fill me again with Your Spirit. Take the grace, truth, mercy, comfort, and hope You have worked into my life and use them for Your purposes. Give me eyes to recognize the people around me who are searching for hope. Give me wisdom to know when to listen, courage to speak when You open the door, and humility to remember that I am not their Savior. Let my life point beyond me and toward You. May others see the Lighthouse through the way I live, love, serve, and speak. I pray this in Your Name, Amen.
🗺️ Plot Your Course
This week, identify one thing Christ has poured into your life that you can intentionally carry to someone else. Then look for one person who may need it.
Encourage them.Listen to them.Serve them.Pray for them.Share what Christ has done in your life when the opportunity comes.
And when God opens the door, don't stop at telling them how you survived your storm.
Tell them Who brought you through it.
The Harbor was never meant to be where your journey ended.
Come to Jesus. Drink deeply. Then go out with purpose.
Follow Jesus. Make Him known.
🛟 Your First Step Home
Perhaps you have been reading about living water but realize you have never personally come to Jesus to drink.
The invitation Jesus gave in John 7 is still beautiful in its simplicity: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.”
You don't need someone else's testimony. You need Jesus. He died for your sins, rose again, and offers forgiveness and new life to those who put their faith in Him.
You can come to Him today:
Lord Jesus,
I know that I am a sinner and I need You. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. Forgive me and make me new. I put my faith in You as my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Spirit and teach me to follow You. Be the Lighthouse that guides my life and the safe Harbor where my soul finds its home. Then use my life to point others toward You.
In Your Name, I pray, Amen.
Until Our Next Harbor Stop…
