Today, we arrive at Harbor Stop 9: The Father’s Love

Today’s Scripture: John 3:16–17 (NKJV): “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

You do not have to find your way to God before He will love you. His love has already come looking for you through Jesus Christ. Whether you have never known Him or once followed Him but sailed away, the invitation remains the same: Turn toward our Savior Jesus, the Lighthouse, believe in Him, and receive the life He offers.

🏠 Safe Harbor Awaits

Many people spend their lives searching for a love that will make them feel known, wanted, and safe. Some look for it in relationships. Others seek it through success, possessions, approval, or temporary pleasures. Yet even when those things are found, the heart may remain empty.

That emptiness points to a deeper need. We were created to know God, but sin separated us from Him. We could not cross that distance through good works, religious effort, or our own ability to change.

God’s love was not merely spoken from the shores of Heaven. It was demonstrated at the cross. He sent His Son into a broken world to seek the lost, bear our sin, and open the way for us to be reconciled to Him.

The Father’s love is available to the person who has never known Him and to the believer who has drifted from Him. But love does not leave us lost, bound, or unchanged. It calls us out of the darkness and into the new life found in Jesus Christ.

The Harbor is open, but each Captain must decide whether to turn toward it.

⚓ Drop Anchor

Drop Anchor in this truth: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ~ Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

Pause and Pray: Father, help me understand the love You have shown through Jesus Christ. Reveal anything that keeps me from receiving Your grace. Give me the courage to turn from sin, believe Your Word, and follow the Lighthouse home. Amen.

🧭 Check Your Bearings

Salvation begins with recognizing where we are and who can save us. A Captain cannot correct the vessel’s course while refusing to admit it is headed in the wrong direction.

Ask yourself:

–   Do I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, or have I relied upon religion, family heritage, or good works?

–   Have I believed the gospel and surrendered my life to Christ?

–   If I once followed Jesus, where have I allowed sin, disappointment, or distraction to pull me away?

–   What keeps me from responding to the Father’s love today?

God’s Word is the Compass that reveals both our condition and the way home: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” ~ Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

Every person needs salvation. No one is so good that salvation is unnecessary, and no one is so lost that salvation is impossible.

📖 Voices from the Harbor

Hosea’s life became a living picture of God’s faithful love toward those who had turned away from Him. Gomer left the security of her home and eventually found herself in bondage. Yet God instructed Hosea to seek her, love her, and purchase her freedom (Hosea 3:1–3).

Hosea did not wait for Gomer to escape or find her own way home. He went to where she was and paid the price necessary to redeem her. His actions reflected God’s heart toward people who are spiritually lost and bound by sin.

Like Gomer, we cannot free ourselves from bondage. Sin separates us from God, and no amount of human effort, good works, or religious devotion can restore what sin has broken. Yet the Father did not leave us in our lost condition. Just as Hosea sought Gomer and paid the price to bring her out of bondage, God sent His Son to seek and save the lost. Through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the price for our redemption and opened the way for us to be forgiven, restored, and reconciled to the Father. “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” ~ Ephesians 1:7 (NKJV)

The cross reveals that the Father’s love is neither passive nor distant. His love comes looking for the lost, reaches into the bondage of sin, and offers freedom to those who cannot save themselves.

The life of John Newton offers a historical picture of that redeeming grace. As a young sailor, Newton lived in open rebellion against God and eventually became involved in the transatlantic slave trade. During a violent storm at sea, believing that his ship might sink, he cried out to God for mercy. That desperate prayer marked the beginning of his journey toward faith in Jesus Christ.

Newton’s transformation did not happen all at once. Over time, God confronted his sin and changed the direction of his life. Newton eventually became a minister and later spoke publicly against the slave trade in which he had once participated. Looking back upon his life, he understood that he had not rescued himself; he had been found, forgiven, and redeemed by the grace of God.

That realization was later expressed through the words of his best-known hymn, Amazing Grace.

Like Gomer, Newton had traveled into deep bondage and could not free himself. Yet the Father’s love reached him where he was, and Jesus called him to leave his old course behind. The same grace that reached John Newton continues to reach lost souls today. No one has traveled too far, fallen too deeply, or remained lost too long for Jesus to save.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Darryl Strawberry was one of professional baseball’s most celebrated players. He achieved the success many people spend their lives pursuing, yet behind the championships and public recognition was a man struggling with deep pain, addiction, and destructive choices.

His life eventually unraveled through substance abuse, legal trouble, serious illness, and incarceration. The accomplishments that once defined him could not heal his brokenness or free him from the bondage controlling his life. Strawberry discovered that talent, fame, and success could never satisfy the deepest need of his heart.

Through surrendering his life to Jesus Christ, he found the redemption and transformation he could not produce for himself. Today, Strawberry openly shares the gospel and uses his testimony to offer hope to people struggling with addiction, failure, and the consequences of their past.

His story reminds us that the Father’s love is not reserved for those who have lived respectable or successful lives. It reaches those who have fallen, failed, and reached the end of themselves. What the world may call a ruined life; Jesus can redeem and give a new purpose.

Gomer, John Newton, and Darryl Strawberry lived in very different generations, yet each story reveals the same truth: no form of bondage is stronger than the redeeming love of God. Jesus still seeks the lost, breaks the chains of sin, and gives new life to those who turn to Him.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” ~Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)

Whether you have never known the Father or once followed Him but sailed far away, you are not beyond the reach of His saving love. Jesus is still seeking the lost, the Lighthouse is still shining, and the way home remains open.

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” ~ Luke 19:10 (NKJV)

⛵ Adjust Your Sails

Receiving God’s love requires more than agreeing that He exists. Salvation calls for a personal response to Jesus Christ.

You may need to: Recognize that sin has separated you from God. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again. Turn away from the course you have been following. Confess Jesus Christ as Lord. Entrust your life and your eternal future to Him.

If you once followed Christ but have drifted away, do not allow shame to keep carrying you farther from the Harbor. Turn back to Jesus, out Lighthouse. Confess what has drawn you away and allow the Father to restore your fellowship with Him.

The winds of your past do not have to determine your future course. The Holy Spirit can direct the Rudder as you align your life with the Compass and fix your eyes upon Jesus.

🌅 Harbor Reflections

Take a quiet moment and picture the cross.

Jesus did not give His life because humanity had earned God’s affection. He gave His life because the Father loved a world that was lost and unable to save itself.

–   The cross tells the sinner, “The price has been paid.”

–   It tells the ashamed, “Forgiveness is available.”

–   It tells the wanderer, “There is a way home.”

–   It tells the forgotten, “You are seen and loved.”

Do not measure the Father’s love by how others have treated you. Measure it by the cross, where God showed how far He was willing to go to redeem you.

🧹 Maintain the Deck

Once you receive salvation, continue clearing away anything that interferes with your relationship with God.

–   Refuse the lie that you must earn the love Christ has already demonstrated.

–   Do not allow shame over forgiven sin to become a chain God never asked you to carry.

–   Guard against returning to the habits and influences from which Christ has delivered you.

–   Stay in God’s Word, remain connected to other believers, and respond when the Holy Spirit corrects your course.

Grace does not give us permission to continue sailing toward destruction. Grace rescues us, teaches us, and leads us into a new way of living.

🤲 Cast Your Cares

The Father’s love meets us wherever we are, but each of us must decide how we will respond. Perhaps you have never received His gift of salvation. Maybe you once followed Christ but have drifted from Him, or perhaps your heart is burdened for someone who remains lost. Whatever has brought you to this Harbor Stop, you are invited to bring it honestly before the Father. Release the sin, shame, fear, or worry you have been carrying, and trust the One whose love came searching for you.

If you have never received Christ: Cast aside the belief that you must repair your life before coming to Him. Come honestly, repent of your sin, and place your faith in Jesus Christ.

If you have drifted from Christ: Cast your shame upon Him. Admit where you have wandered and turn toward the Lighthouse again. The Father’s desire is to restore you, not drive you farther away.

If you are praying for someone who is lost: Cast that person into the Father’s care. Continue praying, loving, and speaking truth, but remember that only the Holy Spirit can awaken a heart and turn a soul toward Christ.

🗺️ Plot Your Course

Read John 3:16–17 again, replacing the word whoever with your own name. Remember that God’s invitation is offered personally to you, but it must also be personally received.

If you are ready to place your faith in Christ, you can pray: Father, I know that I have sinned and cannot save myself. I believe You sent Jesus Christ to die for my sins and that He rose again. I turn away from my old course and place my faith in Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Forgive me, give me new life, and help me follow You. Amen.

A prayer does not save through the words alone. Salvation comes through genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. If you have made that decision, tell another believer and begin learning to follow Christ through prayer, Scripture, and fellowship.

Then look for another weary traveler who needs to hear the good news:

The Father’s love has not remained on a distant shore. Through Jesus Christ, He came looking for the lost and He paid the price to bring us home.

🛟 Your First Step Home

Heavenly Father,

I know that I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I believe that You love me and sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sins and rise again. I repent of my sin and turn from the course I have been following. Please forgive me, cleanse my heart, and make me new.

Jesus, I place my faith in You as my Savior and surrender my life to You as my Lord. Thank You for seeking me when I was lost, paying the price for my redemption, and welcoming me into the family of God. Help me follow You, trust Your Word, and live in the new life You have given me.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Find a Bible-believing church where you can grow in your faith, worship with other believers, serve God with the gifts He has given you, and walk alongside others who are following Jesus. You were never meant to make this journey alone.
